Thanks for the information re. Almonte. My great grandfather, Allan Gilmour, was born there when it was Ramsay - it took a long time to find out about the name change ! - and later emigrated to Australia in 1861, so I'm particularly interested in the early days and anything concerning the family history. I hope - some day - to visit, so am looking forward to the time when I can use the info on tourism !

Your Web Site is very impressive. I haven't looked at it since you first created it, and I was impressed then too. I'm very interested in Almonte because my Great Great Great Grandfather was Daniel Shipman. I visited once a long time ago, but I want to visit real soon again. I also would like to find out as much information about Daniel as possible; where he lived, what he looked like, where he is buried, etc. I would even love to live in Almonte, but I have a busy life in Toronto. Maybe when I retire. I work in the arts community. Does Almonte have any theatre groups , music or arts festivals? Have any other Shipmans' made themselves known to you over the years, or am I the first? Almonte is a very pretty town and I very proud to be associated with it. Please send me an email, I would be very happy to receive any additional information about Almonte or Daniel Shipman.
Thank you.
Sincerely, Robert Shipman.

I have been visiting almnonte for some years now as I have family in Burnt Lands and intend to retire to Almonte in a few years. In August I bought an apartment in the former woollen mill and will visit this August as usual. I would like to housew-sit or rent a (not too expewnsive) apartment/small cottage for a month. Can you help? Also, I need a fax or e-mail address for a property agent named Cleary and for the Almonte branch of the Bank of Montreal. I would be really grateful for help as it isn't too easy doing these things from such a distance.
I am a mid-fifties teacher, fluent in French, German and speaking some Italian,Spanish,Czech/Polish,fairly widely travelled in all continents except Australia, and for me there is no country that compares to Canada - I am looking forward so much to settling in your lovely town. I should add that for many years I was active in community affairs, in fact I was Mayor of our town (pop.20000)

Hi Tout le monde,
To answer a question posed by the first person in book from Sweden. The name Almonte is Spanish/Arabic for "the mountain or hill". If it was purely spanish it would El monte. This is because the town originally is in southern spain, near Huelva (the site of a beautiful park, destroyed recently by a Canadian mining company. I met the mayor (major) of this town several years ago and he was interested in twinning the towns. The town is interesting for several reasons. First, it is the site of the most holy parade (after Santiago de Campostella, Galicia) in Spain. The town boasts a statue of the holy Mary, discovered in the 1920s by two young sisters under a tree. It is paraded thru the town every year and is televised to all of Spain. There a large number of monks in town who have the disconcerting habit of letting off large, loud rockets at the most fragile times, ie sunday morning, early.
Anyway, good to see Almonte is on the highway.
I am interested in a reunion of people from the year 1979, our graduation year for a reunion in 1999. I need to hear from people who may still live in the vicinity. Is Tim Timmons, Steve Maynard still around or have we all left.
Regards to all,
James Coupland

The heritage buildings are wonderful and so glad that they have remained as is as they are a wonderful memory of our country's past. Everyone in town said
hello to us and we felt very welcome. Perhaps we will get a wee piece of land there and retire in the area in a few years. We really enjoyed the antique shops
and took a leisurely walk to the rapids behind the park in town. We will go back there for a picnic soon. Thanks again for a wonderful site.

On Canada Day I visited a great bar in your beautiful town called the Almonte Roadhouse, they had bands and entertainment there and my favorite was the Roadhouse line dancers. They were excellent. Keep up the good work girls!

My wife & I were in Almonte last week and fell in love with the area. We were part of the Levi Family Reunion. Tom Levi, son of the owner of the local hardware store, showed us around and we are looking forward to returning to Almonte.Viewing your website makes us want to return sooner than we can.
Thank you for the site and maybe we will meet on our return to Almonte.

We are former residents of Almonte. We enjoyed the curling and other social-life of Almonte in the mid to late 50's. Our memories of this town are happy. We visit our sister-in-law, Cathy Finner, and Walter's brother Bernard, his wife Pat, and their family when time permits. Walter notices the good change in this growing community, where he was born (in 1926). We look forward to a family get-together this Civic Holiday Weekend on the occassion of the wedding of our niece, Cindy, to Ryan. Our kindest regards to the residents of this Friendly Town.

It is great to know that when I want to see my hometown, it is just a click away. My wife Nancy and myself are both from Almonte and we both think it is great that Almonte has it's own little spot in cyberspace. Say hello to Stanley Jones, Bob green, Carmel Green and to all the friends that I used to chum with, please. Scott Mitchell if you see this take care man.

I was both thrilled and amused to find "Almonte, The Friendly Town" on the internet! My father grew up in Almonte and I remember the almost 6 hour drive up from home to visit Grandma Emon and our assorted other family members as a child. We don't get up too often now, but hope to make it up this August Long Weekend for my cousin Cindy's wedding. A wonderful site to visit...can't wait to share it with my Dad!

This is a message from my brother Logan, my mom Brenda and me, Chris. We are in NC right now but are just about to return home to Almonte in a few days. Mom and Logan now live in St. John, NB and I continue to live here in Chapel Hill. Can't wait to see everyone at home. We as a family have travelled the world and still find Almonte to be one of the most beautiful towns. Sometimes it takes leaving to appreciate it.
Logan says have a nice time on the internet.
(logan mcilravey, 10 uears old, tomorrow June 29 is his birthday) Happy Birthday Logan!
