I think Almonte is a great town. Some of the happiest times of my life were spent there. My family would go there every summer for two weeks.I remember the first thing us kids would do was to kiss our Grandmother hello and head straigt for her kitchen where there was a big chocolate cake and a bottle of milk.( milk came in a bottle then ).Needles to say the cake and milk didn't last long....Grin Almonte also had the best swimming. It had this great dock that we would run and jump off of.I use to love just being by myself and walking through the town and think to myself what it was like 100 years ago. I also use to like to sit by the boat docks and watch the water,it was so peacefull. My uncle Bob and his family lived in Almonte at that time also he had a resterant and gas bar up on the HWY and we would go there with our cousins and they would make us cheese burgers and fries,it use to drive my uncle crazy. He would say how the hell are we going to make any money if you kids keep giving the stuff away for free. Then there was the movie house ( I call it that because it was not much bigger then a house )anyway we would each get 50 cents or a dollar and just go nuts.As you can see I use to love this place and I miss thoughs times now very much.My Father was born in Almonte in 1929 and I can just see him when he was a boy having all the fun we use to have When life gets rough now and things get crazy I love to go back to that slow happy time in my life and I am very thankfull. Almonte you have made this man very happy and givin him a life full of great memories. Ps Grandma I miss you and love you very much.Submitted by: Steven B McDonald <smcdonald@sympatico.ca>

I liked the history segment that was listed under "About Almont". The map should be moved onto the main home page instead of being burried in small print in the 'Tourism' section. It may also help to have several maps: 1) Canada, 2) Eastern Onatio - like you do now, but clearer, 3) All the smaller roads routes, like what's in the phone book, 4) Street map. I think that if you linked the photos as number to the ths varous spots on the street map it could look quite nice. Did you think of linking to the local theatre or real estate office? The reason why I'm on your site is to pick a restaurant to go there with a date and look at your Christmas lights which I've heard are quite nice. Thanks, Robert...Submitted by: Robert L. Hello, I am searching for the family of George & Annie Cook who lived in Almonte in 1901. George was a baker and Annie was a "servant" in the home of George & Nancy Illingsworth. George & Annie were born in England. They lived at W. Bridge St. in the Illingsworth home. The Illingsworth children were John b.1883 & Maggie b.1887. Can anyone help me with information about any of these folks ? I also would like to know the name of any bakeries which were in business in 1901, as George Cook was a baker in 1901. I visited Almonte in May ans was most impressed by its beauty. I was there doing some research into the John king Home family who lived there from 1861 through 1878. I came across your site today and wondered if you might be interested in an old photograph I received recently of my great-great uncle John King Home and his brass band taken by Albert Farr, photographer, Cole's Hall, Almonte, Ont. John K. Home moved to Almonte in 1861 from Prescott when he married Lois Teskey from Appleton in September of 1861. John Home had a tin shop on Mill street (I have found ads from the mid to late 60s in the newspapers) and then he moved to Hamilton in about 1878. I have more data but I thought it might be interesting to someone involved in the history of Almonte. There are 8 men all holding their instruments. I would love to get some local feedback as well.Submitted by: Barbara Stokely <bstokely@aol.com>

My mother's family lived in Almonte after emigrating from Macclesfield, Cheshire, in the early 1900s. My grandfather was Frederick George Hughes, my grandmother was Louisa Gosling. Fred and family moved to Paterson, N.J., but his brother, whose name I don't recall, and a sister, I believe was named Harriet Ann, stayed in Almonte. One of them had a daughter, I believe, named Edith who also lived in Almonte. My grandfather was a weaver, so I recall. I've heard a lot about Almonte, but have never visited. The internet brings it a bit to reality. Nice website. Dick GriffithSubmitted by: Richard J. Griffith <rgriffith@dellnet.com>

A number of my relatives lived in Almonte. I remember visiting there almost every Sunday. Dad would always stop at the chip wagon on our way home. My cousins and I would visit the corner store, where we would buy a small brown bag of candy for 25¢ - and it would be full of wonderful treats. A close friend of mine that I started school with in Bells Corners, moved to Almonte quite a few years ago. I'd love somehow to make contact with her. Her maiden name was Carol Boucher. I do not know her married name. If someone can connect us I would be most appreciative. Many thanks for the memories. My mother's maiden name was Bandy. My great-grandmother's name was Barr. The Barr's lived in Almonte all their lives. My cousins might still be there. Their parents were Earl and Lilis Barr. I didn't know that i could find another town with the same name. Why Almonte? Is a Spanish colony? What means for you, in that town, Almonte? Here, Almonte is union from two words "Al monte" that means "To the mountain" because Almonte is in a relative high land. Excuse me for my poor English.Submitted by: luis <luisco@ole.com>

Hi, I visited Almonte about 6 years ago. It was the birth place of my Grandfather, William Metcalfe,7th son of Jean McLean Metcalfe and Hugh Kirby Metcalfe. My father (Williams 7th son) told me stories of Almonte and I was very pleased and surprised to find markers at "Metcalfes" well. My dad never got to see Almonte. But listened to his fathers stories of 1800's. I visited the Presbyterian church one Sunday when there and met an older delightful couple who shared my love of Westies and knew my great-uncle Dr. Archie Metcalfe. My cousin Clarence Metcalfe from Gloustershire is the grandson of "John". We also visted the park. Almonte is a delight ful place. Thankyou for your link on the net!Submitted by: Vickie Metcalfe <vmetcalf@sendit.nodak.edu>

Curious... There is another ALMONTE in Spain (maybe is the origin of the General Almonte´s surname). Is a famous town in Spain because of the Virgin of Rocio. Once a year pilgrims of all over Spain go to The Rocio, in Almonte. Even the Pope John Paul II was there. Moreover, the biggest natural reservation in Europe is in Almonte: The Doñana National Park. I didn't know about another Almonte... In Canada!! I'm very surprised. Greetings from Spain.Submitted by: Juan Antonio Mallén Najas <omaly@ctv.es>

While doing some research I came across two brothers by the name of Edwin and Willard McGreggor. They were a pair of hockey players in the 1910-15 era. Would anyone know more about this pair? I believe one had the nickname of "The Tourist" owing to the number of teams he appeared on one season. My belief is that they started out in the Upper Ottawa Valley Hockey League. Oh yes, and please drop by Almonte Natural Foods (say hi to my mother-in-law if she's in).Submitted by: Joseph <nieforth@yahoo.com>

When I was a young lad I used to visit my uncle's farm which was a couple of miles out of Clayton. My uncle's name was Harold Fligg. He was born in Almonte along with 3 Sisters, Inez, Alda and Ethel . All were born around 1901 or earlier. Is there anybody out there who remembers the Fligg name. Not only is the Naismith name famous but the Fliggs were of a historical significance in a small way. Their parents were born in Newcastle,Ontario-William Lewis Fligg and his brother George were good friends of the Massey family and adopted one of theirs in 1857. I don't think the history books printed that one! Either way Almonte is FULL OF HISTORY. Anybody out there remember Wilfy Snedden, the pharmacist? He sure made good ice cream sodas! E-mail at rollingacres@on.aibn.com William Lewis Fligg was married to a Mary Jane Oakes who was related to Sir Harry Oakes, the mult-millionaire Miner who discovered the Lakeshore Mine in Kirkland Lake,Ontario in 1912.Submitted by: Donald McLean <rollingacres@on.aibn.com>
