I grew up in Almonte and attended St. Mary's school and attended Almonte high school for a couple of years. Retired from Atomic Energy Of Canada At Chalk River About ten years ago. Often think of the people I knew before I left such as The McAullife's Prices Finners And Emmon's and more, one guy in particular named Billy Price, I understand he is some where in Australia. Would be nice to know his E mail address. All the best to Almonte. V.A Moreau

I miss my old home town dearly - Almonte. My family, Ron Syme, Barry Syme, Ted Syme, Chris Syme have lived in Almonte at one time or another. I went to grade school and high school there. Whenever I visit and walk down Mill Street I never fail to receive a wave and a hearty hello - makes one feel warm all over. Love to drop in at the Superior Restaurant for my favourite hamburger and banana cream pie or have an ice cream at Petersons Dairy near the falls. I know in my heart that I will return one day, to my home (perhaps when I am ready to retire). I hope you realize that your web site brought a couple of tears to my eyes - reminescing, I guess. Almonte is and will always be special for me. Thanks. David Syme

Where have I been? I didn't know that wee little Almonte had its very own website. Surprise, surprise! After reading some of the other guestbook comments, I can understand why some people enjoy Almonte so much. It was a pretty good place to grow up, not too small and no where near too big. Affectionately nicknamed Funmonte, I would have to say that there is much fun to be had in our little town, you just have to know where to look for it!

Hi! I'm so excited to soon be moving myself and my little textile biz (custom made wool rugs) to Almonte -- enjoying this website, especially the wonderful guestbook, has totally confirmed my decision! Though I've grown up in Ottawa and Halifax, my family has roots in Almonte and Middleville and I can't wait to finally call this lovely region my home too. In the meantime, if anyone out there can help me find a home - a modest apartment for a modest price, that is - I'd be so grateful. Walking distance to the Thoburn Mill ideally, but a wee drive is fine too. Occupancy early 2002. Thanks and I'm soooo looking forward to raising a glass with you!

I'll be visiting again in October this year and I'm looking forward to seeing my friends and family. I love the web site but I'm sure the business section could be expanded greatly; there are some fine businesses there of surprising diversity. I also endorse the comments of other people in your guestbook - there are indeed some wonderful, friendly people in Almonte and the surrounding area.

I was surprised that my initial readings didn't list Tait MacKenzie and the Mill immediately. It is written up fairly often as a site to visit. We visited the War Memorial in Almonte done by him because it mentions the Battle of Courcelette. I taught at Courcelette P.S. in Toronto and photographed the Almonte Memorial because of its connection to the Battle at Courcelette and also visited Courcelette, France because of the school. The school was named for the Battle, as was the street it is on, Courcelette Road. Some former students of the school fought and died in the Battle. Could you put info on the times of opening of the Mill of Kintail? Tait M. was described as one of Canada's best artists (sculpture) althogh generally unknown here, but not in the U.S. Thanks.

Is there anyone here who can help me find information on my maternal grandfather - Elias James Simpson Rivett. I have come to a dead end in my genealolgy search. He apparently worked in one of the mills in Almonte as a supervisor. He married my grandmother - Mary Ellen McInnes on October 14.1903 - they were married in the township of Horton but their marriage certificate states that my grandfather was a resident of Lanark of the township of Almonte at that time and he was born in Almonte of July 22.1867. I would also like to be able to find more info about my great grandparents - Christmas Rivett who died in Almonte in April,1906 and my great grandmother - Rachel Ann Carr Rivet who died in Almonte on Dec.9.1902. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all so much for taking the time to read through this. I can be reached privately via e-mail at djnicol@attglobal.net. Again - thanks for any input you can give me.

I have always found Almonte to be a beautiful and interesting city. For about 7 years I used to drive over from Bells Corners with my Chesapeake Retriever, "Beau", for walks around the town and beside the river. (Beau was an enthusiastic swimmer.) Some people called Beau the "ice-cream dog", because he always insisted on stopping at Petersen's either at the start or the end of the walk. For those who remember this mahogany "Chessie", he died suddenly from a stomach tumour - just about the time that Petersen's closed. P.S. What is happening on the restoration of the Grandstand at the fairgrounds?

My husband and I absolutely adore Almonte. Everyone is genuinely friendly and helpful. It is truly a wonderful place to visit. We especially love staying at The Old Burnside B&B.The hosts (Howard and Marilyn Campbell) treat each guest like a VIP and we were no exception. If you want the star treatment, as well as the most comfortable bed and gourmet breakfast, we most heartily endorse and recommend The Old Burnside Inn. We have stayed there approx. 10 times, and as far as we are concerned there is no finer accommodation in the Ottawa Valley. Cordially yours, Mr. & Mrs. Charles D. McGregor, Whitby, ON

I sent a request on March 5, 2000 and never received a reply. My grandfather arrived in Almonte about 1892. James Cunningham, brothers William and Frank and little sister Mary (Margaret). Their mother had just died in Glasgow, Scotland and they came as orphans. Have a book from and group picture taken in Almonte High School. What is the history of that time? Did children arrive by ship and get placed in an orphanage? How can I get the history of the school, orphanages, group homes that took these children? Would like to be able to receive info on the period. By 1900 James and William were in Manchester, NH working in the woolen mills here. Appreciate any address where I can get this research. I guess I should have read the other comments firstbefore I posted my previous brief comments. I loved growing up in Almonte and remember the O'Brien theatre, Abbie Lotan's store and Mr. Snedden's drugstore and many others. We lived on the Island for a long time. My Dad welded the gates of the Auld Kirk cemetary. My 3 uncles, Cameron, Jack and Des all worked for Burns Motors in later years and originally for Hill Motors, both GM dealers. I bought all my cars from my Uncles until they left there. Jack also worked at the Registry office. My Dad and his brothers all went overseas in the army in the second world war and they all came back, a fact of which my grandmother was very proud. My grandfather was Town Foreman and we all attended St. Paul's Anglican Church. Reverend Crossley was the minister. His daughter, Pat,became a registered nurse and she taught me when I went in training at the Ottawa Civic Hospital. I remember the Superior restaurant too, and especially cherry cokes with chips (french fries) and gravy. My favorite order at the chip wagon was a hot dog with the chips placed on top of the weiner. We had a great basketball, football and hockey team in high school and we all went to the games. Almonte is the prettiest town and when I return and walk down the streets, precious memories of those days long ago flood over me and I am forever young. Thanks for the opportunity to sing the praises of "My Home Town"

Hi anyone who's interested! I fell in love with Almonte three years ago when visiting my cousin Mary-Ann Rivers who lives in Burnt Lands. I liked it so much I bought an apartment in Millfall and intend to move here within the next five years or so. My mother's sister married a Canadian soldier in England in 1942 and they were happily married until he died in February this year. I have another cousin in Alberta. I'm a teacher, 57 years young,I'm spending August in Deux Montagnes Quebec with my aunt and in Almonte. I'd love to hear from any Almonte resident. I'm interested in books, politics, history, films, travel, food and wine and a bunch of other things. I teach French, German and English literature. Until a few years ago I was very involved in local government, was Town Mayor. My politics are slightly left of centre. I travel to the Czech Republic a lot, I have good friends in Prague. My good friend in Almonte is Margot Haug in Millfall. I'm hoping to hear from you all! Mary Page

I will be coming to Almonte in less than 2 weeks as part of a trip organised by Plymouth in England. I can't wait, especially as I was about 10km from Almonte back in August, while driving from Ottawa to Bath. I am sure that I will enjoy myself as much when I come as I did last summer.

Hi there Almonte: I used to live in Almonte on Ann Street beside Carmel Ohlke and across the street from Ev Barr. I was a music teacher and my ex was a member of the Armed Forces based at Carp. I helped Almonte get the Figure Skating Club into the CFSA and was quite active in the town. (i.e. I played at the Baptist Church (minister was Gord Lanctot), attended the United Church (Minister was Bob McRae)and really enjoyed my tenure there. It is a great little town and even have the distinction of having an old t-shirt saying "Where the Heck is Almonte?" I would like to have some news. If Carmel Ohlke or someone who remembers me is online, please contact me at the above e-mail. I really do miss that little town. It is great.

I was born and raised in Almonte, and still go back every now and again to see "home". Just hearing the name Almonte always brings back fond childhood memories... "New England"... Church Street School... Isabelle's candy store... Walking through Spring Bush and Gemmill Park... Drinking from the spring... Riding bikes down Bay Hill... Jumping off of the train bridge into the flume... Our "Secret Garden"... Building forts... Swimming out to the SECOND raft... Peterson's Ice cream... the old Chip Wagon across from the show... the frozen Waterfals in winter... so many memories!!! I also remember all the friends who were such an important part of my life growing up in Almonte, though we didn't realize it at the time... I was thrilled to find this website... with lots of things to spark those memories. I stumbled on the "Mississippi Mills" site a while back, but the town will always be "Almonte" to me...
